315 SITE

The site alongside Route 315 had been colonized by weeds since the mounds were first created by the Army Corps of Engineers in 1991:

An area 220x60 feet was cleared with a gas-powered weed whacker in mid September (1996) and treated with Roundup a month later. Next a 1 inch layer of composted municipal sewage sludge (Comtil, donated by City of Columbus Compost Facility, State Route 104S, Lockbourne, OH 43137) was spread over the area and this was tilled in to a depth of 3 to 4 inches. At the end of October 50 lbs of winter wheat were drilled in.

By late November the cover crop had established well and helped to stabilize the surface during the winter. Elsewhere on the mound there was considerable erosion.

The whole mound was treated with Roundup in April 1997 as part of a roadside enhancement project. The area for seeding was tilled to a 3 to 4 inch depth in mid-May.
