Prairie Plant Propagation

Establishment of prairie plants by direct seeding or from transplants depends upon seed germination. Forb species are generally more difficult to germinate than grasses. Without appropriate treatments, forbs are slow to establish by direct seeding; seed may remain in the soil for a year or more before germination occurs. Uncertain germination hinders commercial production of many of these plants. Accordingly we have investigated germination, enlisting the aid of undergraduate classes in plant propagation as far as possible.
