To follow up the class findings on the difficulties of germinating some of the prairie species, further tests were done. Lots of 20 seeds in petri dishes were imbibed in water for 24 hours then treated in four ways:
|
| Species | CONT | COLD | ETH | GA |
| Allium cernuum | 10 | 45 | 20 | 5 |
| Anemone canadensis | 0 | 20 | - | - |
| Asclepias tuberosa | 55 | 85 | 75 | 85 |
| Aster novae-angliae | 95 | 100 | - | - |
| Baptisia lactea | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| Echinacea purpurea | 25 | 55 | 60 | 10 |
| Eryngium yuccifolium | 0 | 35 | 0 | 0 |
| Eupatorium maculatum | 10 | 55 | 15 | 50 |
| Monarda fistulosa | 70 | 50 | 60 | 35 |
| Ratibida pinnata | 100 | 100 | - | - |
| Rudbeckia hirta | 25 | 20 | 30 | 5 |
| Silphium integrifolium | 0 | 80 | 5 | 0 |
| Solidago rigida | 70 | 100 | - | - |
| Solidago speciosa | 10 | 100 | - | - |
| Tradescantia ohioensis | 0 | 25 | 0 | 0 |
| Verbena stricta | 5 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| Vernonia fasciculata | 0 | 30 | 0 | 0 |
| Zizia aurea | 0 | 5 | 0 | 0 |
- indicates that seeds were not tested in this treatment.
Although there was some evidence, that hormone treatments promoted germination, they did so in seeds that germinated to some extent without cold treatment. Germination of the more recalcitrant seeds (Baptisia, Verbena and Zizia) was not promoted by cold or hormone treatment. However, reasonable germination of Verbena and Zizia was attained after 120 days stratification.
