The retreat committee, chaired by Ph.D. student Kyle Daniel, aspired to improve the overall graduate student experience by bringing the H&CS research community together to share their work. HCS Ph.D. Candidate Luis da Cunha chaired the Poster Judging Committee. Other goals were to provide a forum to practice formal skills in scientific communication, and invite prospective students to learn about graduate opportunities.
Over 100 faculty, graduate students and guests where hosted by the Department of Horticulture and Crop Science’s (HCS) graduate program at the third annual Graduate Research Retreat and Open House October 3-4 at The Ohio State University.

The retreat began Friday afternoon with a tour led by committee members and MS students Giovani Fae and Peter Zale. Students and guests visited labs, greenhouses and Ohio Stadium on the Columbus OSU campus. The tour returned to Kottman Hall where graduate students, prospective students and faculty gathered for an informal cookout. Included in the 26 guests were representives from several Ohio Universities schools and 4 countries.
Research was the highlight on Saturday with presentations on Breeding and Genetics (Dr. David Francis), Crop Management and Production (Dr. Joe Scheerens), Environmental Horticulture (Dr. Jim Metzger), Physiology and Molecular Biology (Dr. Dave Mackey), Seed Biology (Dr. Mark Bennett), Turf Science and Management (Dr. Dave Gardner), Weed Science (Dr. John Cardina). Dispersed between talks, the research retreat committee conducted the poster competition. Drs. Dave Barker, Karl Danneberger, John Finer, Jim Meztger, Emmy Regnier, Steve St. Martin , Eric Stockinger and Mark Sulc assisted the student committee with judging 20 posters submitted by H&CS graduate students. Graduate students on the retreat and judging committee were Gladys Anguti Andiru, Natalie Bumgarner, Valdir Correa, Giovani Fae, Fernanda Ferraro, Trudi Grant, Upender Somireddy, Nicole Waterland, Shan Wu and Peter Zale. The competition resulted with 12 awards in three classifications as follows.
