The Columbus Horticulture Society, the third oldest Horticulture Society in the United States, was founded April 10, 1845. The founders were citizens who took an early interest in the physical and educational development of Columbus and were instrumental in promoting active participation and interest in horticulture by sponsoring flower and fruit fairs, promoting city parks and planting trees on The Ohio State University campus. As a manifestation of their continued interest in horticulture, the Columbus Horticultural Society established a scholarship in 1963 for the Department of Horticulture at The Ohio State University. This scholarship is awarded only in odd numbered years.
