Internship Requirements Print E-mail

All students majoring in Horticulture and Crop Science are required to complete a 10 week internship prior to graduation. They must work full-time for ten (10) weeks in the industry prior to graduation. It is recommended that students fulfill this requirement in the summer between their junior and senior years. Students receive five (5) academic credit hours for this work experience. The internship can be repeated once for academic credit. (total of 10 hours)

Students are required to locate their own place of employment. Employers who have expressed interest in hiring interns can be found in the intern job-posting notebook found in Howlett 240B. They are also listed on the HCS Web Site. View Internship Opportunities. Tom Shockey will also gladly assist in finding a suitable potential employer. Students seeking a suitable internship should complete a resume and cover letter, and then contact employers with a request for a personal interview. Again, assistance from Tom Shockey is available. Make an appointment…he is more than happy to help with contacts, resumes, cover letters, and interviewing tips.

The student, the employer, and the Student Services Coordinator (Tom Shockey) sign a “Statement of Understanding” prior to the commencement of employment. This is non-binding agreement, which outlines the job responsibilities of the intern, the rate of pay, the start and stop dates for employment, etc. This agreement helps the department, the student, and employer fully understand that an internship is more than a seasonal job…the intern should have a variety of job experiences, a mentoring nurturing relationship with management, and the best possible experience to help in his/her preparation for full-time employment in the Green Industry. Students and employers are asked to complete two (2) observation forms during the term of employment. These forms help Tom monitor the student’s progress while away from campus. In addition, each student working in Ohio is personally visited by Tom at his/her place of employment, if possible. View appropriate forms:
